In Victoria, Australia, the poultry industry produces around 450,000 tons of waste a year. This waste matter has a high methane-producing potential and could be used to feed biogas plants to produce electricity and heat. At the same time, however, the high level of protein and amino acids hinders the anaerobic digestion process. Students at RMIT University Melbourne have been studying the process to identify ways of overcoming these issues.
