Marin Sanitary Service: A Family’s Vision to Zero Waste
Landfill and Waste
When Joe Garbarino’s father arrived in San Francisco in 1920, he understood the enormous economic potential of the refuse that got thrown away. So it was that, having moved to the county of Marin, he became one of the co-founders of Marin Sanitary Service, a waste management and recovery company. Today, the company is managed by three generations of the Garbarino family and enables the recycling of 74% of collected waste. The latest “zero waste” initiative involves the recovery of food waste from restaurants and bars and to be processed via anaerobic digestion, to produce energy.
