La Fattoria della Piana, in Calabria, is a livestock farmers’ cooperative that since 1936 has processed the milk produced by its constituent farms, and is now involved in all activities within the agri-food supply chain. Its 998kW biogas plant is fuelled by the manure of 900 cattle and by cheese processing waste, enabling the production of electricity and thermal energy. The electricity meets the needs of 2,500 households, while the heat is used in the dairy production processes. The digestate is used in the citrus and olive groves.

Quick facts:
Plant size: 998 kW
Feedstocks: manure produced by 900 cows, sewage, processing leftover milk, agricultural waste (olive and citrus pulp)
